This was the last shoot we did on the way to the reception, and we just bailed out of the trolly car that was shuttling the party to hit this last spot. We were in the barn for less than two minutes due to our tight schedule.......stoked we were able to pull it off in time..... Happy for you Josh and Jenny, great week, thanks for everything.

Camera Gear Hack - Intervalometer conversion

Ive always been stoked on looking at timelapse and super long shutter photos, so i recently purchased an intervalometer for my G-12 so I could shoot timelapses on the side while working on other stuff with the Mark IV. I did a little research, and figured out how to make an adapter so the intervalometer would work with the Mark IV AND the G12, and keep it as cheap as possible.

The first thing you need to do is get an Intervalometer that works on the G12. These end with a mini 3/32"headphone jack which Canon refers to as N3, its found on most consumer level Canon cameras. Next, find or buy a ghetto shutter release cable with the E3 plug. The Canon E3 plug is the one found on most all Canon pro body cameras and finding a spare one of these is probably the toughest part of this, and probably the reason that Canon brand E3 level intervalometers are hundreds of dollars more than knock off ones made with with the mini headphone jack.

Once you have both of these, a quick trip to Radio Shack will get you everything you need to make an adaptor.

Step One : Cut the E3 plug from whatever accessory you got it from, but be sure to leave a few inches of wire to work with, and then strip down the wires for work. The red wire is the shutter trigger, the white wire is the focus trigger, and the wire in the paper sheath is the ground.

Step Two: Slide the sheath off the In-Line 1/8' phone jack, and slide it over the wire bundle coming from the E3 plug, if you forget this it wont fit on after you do the soldering.

The red shutter trigger wire goes to the flange with the square end, and the white shutter wire goes to the flange with the rounded end. The ground wire goes to the flange that extends furthest from the female end of the jack.

Set up a little vice and solder those babies up. (Remember to tin the bare wires to prep for soldering and too sand down the flanges a bit) Hopefully you left extra wire so this work isnt too hard, you can always trim, but adding wire is not possible.

Step Three: Slide the sheath over thethe jack and plug the 3/32" to 1/8" Adapter into the 1/8' phone jack that is now on the end of your E3 plug, and boom, you've successfully created an E3-N3 adapter.

The goal of this shot was to show, in one image, a kid who's an expert traveler, an avid outdoorsman, ready for anything, and looking like he just got to resort X, ready to explore and learn the in's and out's of a new town.

One of the best come-ups last winter for Jonah and I was getting a 3 page fold-out in Pleasure Snowboard Magazine. This sequence also ran in Transworld Snowboard Magazine but they ended up cropping it 2 page style. I think the 3 page layout is awesome, it shows way more of the trick and spot, which was what I was going for when I shot this. Lucas Magoon used our rental mini van and a few hundred feet of rope to make a pulley system and Jonah was just flying into this thing. A quick ollie onto the loading dock and then a up and over the door to the landing. Check - - >, "The Arena" Major props to Pleasure's photo editor, Markus Fischer, for recognizing a small nuance (a super panoramic sequence) in a photo from halfway across the world, and helping share it.

Mid Winter Update

This is Matt Delang, aka "The Perfect Storm" or "The Storm" for short. Matt rolled out with Cole and E-Stone to go shoot one day in a pair of rubber fishing boots, like he was off the deck of a trawler, and E-Stone coined the name, which stuck.

Jake Devine and Brendon Drury enroute to scope a massive gap above Donner Lake in Truckee. It got dark on us, and thanks to awesome 3G coverage, we were able to download flashlight apps on our phones and ride a bunch of POW back to the car via Ipones and Droids.

Andrew Brewer, Tahoe POW, and Donner Pass is a winning combo.

Holiday POW in in Tahoe equals MAJOR traffic problems. The roads get real wild when you mix angry locals with blacked out season passes and Bay Area gapers who have NO CLUE about how to drive in the snow.

Tahoe has so much terrain to explore. I spent a day shooting with K.C. Deane and Scott Nikkel in Blackwood in December and it was my first day of the winter sledding from dusk till dawn. I love that shit.

When I hit the road with the Technine x FODT crew, the first thing we usually do is head into the worst part of town looking for spots. That might sound like a bad idea but when theres four feet of snow on the ground and its ten below zero or worse, most people look at us like we are the dangerous ones. A few sketchy characters always emerge here or there, but they are usually pretty stoked once they see what we're all about because its usually the last thing they expect.

Lucas Magoon is back in full force. I love shooting with these dudes and moments like these, when the riders and filmers see their shots for the first time are always priceless. It's usually less than a minute of props, high fives, wows, ooohs, and awwws, and then guess, what, back on the grind. Thats why I love these shots because film trips are crazy, and these small moments are when the crew exeriences the highest highs of the trip. Its unlikely that Lucas will see the video shot he was looking at in this photo untill next fall during a movie premier on a big screen

Tommi Ylianttila and I recently made our way to a new river to get out lines wet and continue our mission of catching fish all 12 months of the year. We fished hard but unfortunately fishing was slow and we both got skunked. Tommi almost had a few early in the day but they shook the hook. We saw a ton of spawned out brown trout washing up on shore though, which is just a part of life on the river. Next spring their eggs with hatch and thousands of new browns will be born with the destiny of ending up on a hook on the end of my fly line.

I also was inspired by another photographer recently and have started to play with using film textures in Adobe Photoshop. This was my first run at it on fishing shots, and I can see tons of potential with more time and refinement as well as tons of danger of just butchering photos with too much of a good thing. What do you think?

Its incredible to see graphic evidence of ancient people in person, outside the confines of a museum or preserve or classroom, in the wild. These paintings were reportedly left by the Fremont Indians, and these ones could actually be considered murals, as they reached heights of 20 ft.

< DVS Shoes recently awarded Snowboarder Magazine senior staff photographer and SLC local with his very Snow Series shoe. Nearly 100% waterproof, these shoes tear up wet and snowy streets, while keeping your feet warm and dry on a pair of insoles featuring E-Stones photography. The snow series hangtags feature a photo I took of MFM snowboarding in the Utah sidecountry, which seriously stokes me out as well. Another snowboard photographer from SLC, Andy Wright, has a signature signature shoe, so both he and E-Stone have joined ranks with legendary skateboard photographer Atiba Jefferson. Atiba's shoe was released years ago, but is still fresh in my mind as some of the freshest spring time shoes I've had in my life. The right shoe featured black and white scenes of NYC, and the left shoe...you guessed it, SF. A left coast/right coast kinda thing. A tip of my hat to DVS, their team, products, and practices have always been on point.

Nevada Mission With Ross Baker

This was one of the best camping snowboarding trips of my life. Ross Baker led the charge with a first descent down a couloir he named "The Drunken Indian" in honor of a local we met in Elko. The following day we hiked the Terminal Cancer Coulair, the trips objective. I dropped first and Ross followed. I should have stopped and shot some wide stuff from inside there but i couldnt bring myself to stop, and rode the line from the top to the river without stopping. Coolest line of my life, thanks Ross!

I flew over the Grand Canyon the other day for the first time without clouds obscuring the view, and was happy to have my Canon EOS 1d Mark IV with me. Unfortunately, the poor quality of commercial airplane windows tends to considerably degrade the quality of the images shot with a telephoto lens, so i shot wide. A few slices in photoshop shows some of the MarkIV's power on a size SMALL .RAW file format.

First Snowstorm Hits Utah / SnowboarderMag.Com

A little over a week ago SLC skiers and snowboarders focused their attention on NOAA.org, watching an athletic storm approach the Wasatch Mountians via live radar and sat. imaging. Snowboarder Magazine asked me to take a look up there and see what was going on. I found tons of snow, fun shredding on Guardsman's Pass, watched Parker Worthen make 5 casts on his fly rod and catch a trout in ten degree temps, and then went back with young Brady Larson to hit the Brighton Center close out rail while its still huge. In late May I flew out to Southern California, having written the season off, surfing and visiting family and friends seemed like a good call. Towards the end of my second week in Cali, while on the beach in Laguna, I watched weather reports of a crazy late season storm in Lake Tahoe roll onto my phone. The next day was the same thing, perfect weather in Laguna, but up North the storm was still raging.

I was pretty much content to blow it off and stay on the beach and in the water, but with phone conversations to friends in the Tahoe/Truckee area sounding like ~ "I CANT BELIEVE this is happening in the end of May" ~ "6+ feet on Donner Summit, Im too tired to count, we're hiking again tomorrow...." ~ "You are blowing it if you arent here" ~ and so on, and so forth. The next day I was on a plane to Tahoe, and for the next 9 days straight Travis Kennedy, Jake Devine, Cory Cronk, Andrew Brewer, Cole Taylor, and myself did nothing but wake up, go straight into the trenches, shovel snow, shoot/snowboard, eat/party, sleep, and repeat.

The blizzard had pretty much died down when we started our week, but it didn't go out easily, and each and every day brought different, and generally wet weather. Snow, hail, rain and sunshine were common to experience nearly every day shooting on Donner Summit, and it was a good thing our zone was based off of the abandoned transcontinental rail road tunnels cut thru the solid granite of the Sierras. These tunnels allow "easy" access into some backcountry spots in the Donner area. Although level, and protected from the elements, the hike thru these tunnels is not without hazards of its own. Water seeping thru the mountain finds its way in, and freezes, forming miles of ice hikes worthy of Chazz Michael Michaels. As temps change, ice formations on the walls and roofs on the tunnels take on endless shapes and sizes, endlessly freezing and melting and freezing, and sometimes breaking off in basketball, dagger, or washing machine sized chunks. (Check MFM's site for a PHOTO COLLAGE I did on the tunnels. Check TECHNINE SNOWBOARDS' site for some history on the area and more PHOTOS.

This feature in this photograph is a ledge at one of the countless points where the old rail road would enter and leave the darkness of the tunnels on its way over the Sierras enroute to San Francisco, and was high on our list of features to shoot. Jake Devine was the first to give it a shot, and upon reviewing the images that night, we determined that it was an absolute MUST to go back and reshoot. The first time, we just built a lip and landing and hit the thing. Jake was spinning 180's into and out of presses, but the images of him pressing, body parallel with the ledge werent doing it for us, and the snowbank beneath the wall went up to within inches of the TECHNINE graffiti, making the feature look small.

So we woke up, went back with the plan. Jake, Andrew, and myself spent almost two hours hacking away at the frozen snowbank beneath the graffiti on the wall, and maybe 30min re-prepping the lip and landing. Despite a few rain holds and a light drizzle the whole day, we shot. Boardslides, Tailslides, BackLips, and Switch Frontboards. Both Andrew and Jake got the boardslides and Tailslides first try, and then did them once more to dial in style and get a different version of the photo. Then it was show time. First Jake stomped a perfect BackLip, and Andrew Brewer got this PERFECT Switch Frontside Boardslide.

Much respect to Jake and Andrew for handling this the way they did, two of best riding styles I have ever seen. Both of them got two tricks, each with a vertical and horizontal version, on a feature with ZERO room error of any kind. 2 dudes, 4 tricks, 8 photos, 2 Cover Shots. It was one of those days that I wont soon forget; both as a friend and a photographer.

This cover is dedicated to my friend Coogan Kelly, who grew up less than a mile from this location, and was the first person to ever take me to this area.

Its been over a month of steady work and travel and no fishing, so despite an overwhelming desire to get on the river and fish, once on the river, I was content to just soak in the views (best light on the river ive seen in a long time, if you are a shooter, you know what im talking about) and shoot with the G11 and its waterhousing.

i fished a few holes in between shooting, with marginal luck, but Brandon fished hard, and after a quick afternoon rainshower that dropped a ton of leaves into the river, he got a nice brown to take a small San Juan Worm. Its funny how quickly the river shows a change during and after a downpour in the fall, and I think the fish notice it as well, because the ol San Juan Worms always tend to fish well after a rain...Brandon proved this.

I shot these photos of Zach Clanton pumping water during our backpacking trip to the Lone Peak Cirque in, if I remember correctly, late September. We were lucky to find barely flowing water in a sandy creek bed under some large boulders, and this mornings water stop would be all we would get for the next 24 hours. The pain of hiking in my camping stuff, and photo gear, including lighting was a painless 6/10 compared to a few of the walks ive taken with Ross Baker, and for the views up there id do it with more weight if I had to. The trip was epic and I scored one of my favorite photos of all time of the night sky above the cirque on our final evening.

As August rolls in to September, hot days mix with cool nights, and things are getting fun on the river. River flows on the Middle Provo River in Heber City, UT have dropped considerably in the last two days, pushing already hungry trout to the edge.

When the water flows drop like that, the habitat trout enjoy all summer is reduced by up to 50% in some places, forcing a re-shuffling of the pecking order in the sub-aquatic food chain, as close quarters press trout to look for new places to feed and hide. Moving into a cramped apartment with tons of roomates would make even the finest Southern Belle cranky and moody, and thats basically what the fish are dealing with right now. When you hook up, the fights are way more wild that what you see in July or August, when the fish are sluggish from warmer temps and have more room to relax and feed.

The Green River

Neil Provo, Ian Provo, Fishbone, Dutch (the dawg), and myself set out the middle of last week to float the A section of Utah's Green River and shoot some interviews for a project the boys started last winter and are just finishing up. With crystal clear water, 15,000+ fish per mile, personal watercraft, the worlds best water dog, great weather, and enough square cookies to put you straight to bed, the trip was another day in a blessed life. As we were nearing the end of our float the sky opened up and started pouring rain, and the lightning followed shortly after. T'was of the craziest lightning storms ive ever seen, and we still couldn't get Neil to stop fishing........haha

Lightning

Drove through the most awe inspiring lightning storm ive ever seen in my life on the way home from floating and fishing on the Green River with the Provo brothers. To say that we were in the center of the storm would be an understatement. Lightning bolts were shooting from cloud to cloud, ground to cloud, cloud to ground.....it was a miracle that nobody in our crew got hit while loading the boats back in the truck. These are a a few screen shots / frame grabs from footage I shot on the Mark IV @ ISO 51200 on the drive home.

Looks like a long drop over the side of that guard rail.....
